Right-wing rocker Ted Nugent met with Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to lobby for the state to be more hunter-friendly.

Nugent told the Detroit Free Press that “silly, illogical, anti-science regulations” such as transporting a bow in a zipped case and the ban on deer-baiting in the Lower Peninsula cause many hunters to go to other states over Michigan.

Nugent likened wild turkeys to mosquitoes, saying there are too many of each. But there is practical reason for some of the state’s hunting regulations.

Mary Dettloff, spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources, said there’s a good reason deer-baiting is banned in the Lower Peninsula — to prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease among white-tail deer. The ban began in August 2008.

She said in the northeast section of the Lower Peninsula, the baiting ban also helps control the spread of bovine tuberculosis, which can be transmitted from deer to cows.
