Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks referred to Democrats as “socialist” on the House floor and was asked by Rep. Keith Ellison to rescind the comment. Brooks did, only so he could get on with his speech; however, Brooks does believe that many Democrats want to take us down the road of socialism. I pointed out to him that, while he may not have meant it that way, he full well knows that the word “socialist” resonates with his constituency the same way “communist” and “totalitarian” does, and that it is often meant derisively. As an economics major at Duke, and with a mother who taught economics, Brooks is quite aware of what a socialist is; he should, then, also be quite aware that we are nowhere near that on the economic scale.
