Former President Bill Clinton and Republican Congressman Paul Ryan met backstage at a forum on national debt. Clinton said he hopes Democrats aren’t complacent about the victory in NY-26, and Ryan said, about the debt issue, “You gotta get this thing moving.” As Ryan headed for the stage, Clinton invited him to phone him if he wants to talk further (via Political Wire).

Mitt Romney Now Says He Advocated The Bailout He Opposed

Mitt Romney advocated against the bailout in a November 2008 op-ed called “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.” A year later he reiterated his opposition to the bailout.

In 2009, Mr. Romney said Mr. Obama’s plans for rescuing the automobile industry were “tragic” and “a very sad circumstance for this country.”

Now, Romney says Obama copied his idea.

“Mitt Romney had the idea first,” said Eric Fehrnstrom, a Romney spokesman, citing the Times opinion article. “You have to acknowledge that. He was advocating for a course of action that eventually the Obama administration adopted.”

And, then, confusingly, said the bailout was wrong.…

As the debate over raising the debt ceiling and possible cures for the long term deficit heat up, Grover Norquist is again playing an outsized role.
