Edmund Burke Rebukes Grover Norquist

Edmund Burke is generally referred to as the Father of Modern Conservatism.  Grover Norquist . . . well, you know.  Norquist penned an op-ed yesterday arguing in support of his pledge against raising taxes which has been signed by a majority of House members and 41 Senators.  Burke, it turns out, didn’t like pledges.

Obama Gives Republicans A Piece Of His Mind

The president was justifiably angry.

“I’ve been left at the altar now a couple of times,” Obama said of the talks with Boehner…

“It is hard to understand why Speaker Boehner would walk away from this kind of deal,” Obama said. “Can they say yes to anything?”

…”I want them here at 11 a.m. tomorrow,” Obama said sternly. “We have run out of time and they are going to have to explain to me how we’re going to avoid a default.”

FAA Closes Down At Midnight, Furloughing 4000 Workers

Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois blasts the Republicans for not letting go of an anti-union provision resulting in the shutdown.

We’re going to lay off 4,000 people at midnight tonight. Do you think that means anything to them? What I offered was a clean extension that didn’t get into the merits of this, which said let’s put this big debate aside and that debate aside and keep the agency working, the federal aviation administration. [Hatch] said, ‘No, you either take the Republican approach or else.’

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders told radio host Thom Hartmann that a primary challenge to the president would help the progressive agenda.

Sanders: So my suggestion is, I think one of the reasons the president has made the move so far to the right is that there is no primary opposition to him and I think it would do this country a good deal of service if people started thinking about candidates out there to begin contrasting a progressive agenda as opposed to what Obama believes he’s doing. ... Arizonans Think Meteorological Term Is Sign Of Muslim Infiltration

HABOOB-articleLarge

Arizonans are objecting to the word “haboob,” which is a thick dust storm. One minute you use a foreign-sounding word that accurately describes the weather, and the next thing you know, we’re living under Sharia law.

“I am insulted that local TV news crews are now calling this kind of storm a haboob,” Don Yonts, a resident of Gilbert, Ariz., wrote to The Arizona Republic after a particularly fierce, mile-high dust storm swept through the state on July 5. “How do they think our soldiers feel coming back to Arizona and hearing some Middle Eastern term?”

Diane Robinson of …
