Reid Bill To Face Vote 1 A.M. Sunday

02_06_09_harry_reid1

It’s the arcane rules of the Senate. The Reid bill has provisions both parties should like.

According to a memo from his office, Reid’s latest proposal would increase the deficit reduction over 10 years from $2.2 to $2.4 trillion, with a “dollar to dollar” increase in debt ceiling based on a proposal originally authored by McConnell. It would fast-track resolutions of disapproval to allow the president to raise the debt ceiling with the political liability falling on Democrats.

Reid’s proposal establishes spending caps for the next 10 years that, if exceeded, would trigger across-the-board spending cuts. Much of …

Why The Economy Is Not Recovering And Will Not Recover Anytime Soon

downgraph

By Yashwanth Manjunath

The Commerce Department just announced yesterday that GDP growth between April and June of this year was only 1.3 percent, when economists had been expecting 1.8 percent. In addition to less then stellar GDP growth, consumer confidence has fallen to a two-year low. Economic growth is clearly stagnant to the point of virtual nonexistence as we are failing to produce enough jobs to reduce the unemployment rate. House Republicans Spend Their Time Renaming Post Offices In Peoria And Guam

Aung_In_Guam

They can’t do the important business of the country, so they are busy renaming post offices.  House  Speaker John Boehner once mocked the very thing he is now having Congress do:

“With all the challenges facing our nation, it is absurd that Congress spends so much time on naming post offices, congratulating sports teams, and celebrating the birthdays of historical figures,” Boehner said in a September 2010 speech in Washington.

But Thursday night, while Boehner couldn’t get the votes for his debt plan, it was time to get down to some serious business:

A facility as far away as …

Both Parties Are Not Responsible For Our Crisis–Just One Is

There is not equivalency and, like Paul Krugman, I am so tired of hearing, “Both parties are responsible” for our problems. No. One is.

President Obama initially tried to strike a “Grand Bargain” with Republicans over taxes and spending. To do so, he not only chose not to make an issue of G.O.P. extortion, he offered extraordinary concessions on Democratic priorities: an increase in the age of Medicare eligibility, sharp spending cuts and only small revenue increases. As The Times’s Nate Silver pointed out, Mr. Obama effectively staked out a position that was not only far to the right …
