An atheist group wants the cross removed from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
The group’s president, Dave Silverman, insists that no religious symbols should be included in the memorial of the 9/11 terror attacks at Ground Zero if the Christian cross is the only symbol being represented.
“As a public accommodation, the memorial must allow us (and all other religious philosophies) to include our own display of equal size inside the museum, or not include the cross. Equality is an all-or-nothing deal,” Silverman said in a statement…
The iconic World Trade Center cross, made up of two intersecting steel beams …

Accused of having non-consensual sex with an 18-year-old, Congressman David Wu has resigned from Congress.
Wu had defiantly told Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Conn.) and other top House Democrats throughout the weekend and into Monday that he was not leaving office, despite resignation calls from Oregon Democrats. Wu told Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (Conn.) that he had “done nothing illegal” in his encounter with the girl, who was 18 at the time of the incident.
But aides to the two Democratic senators from Oregon, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, told Wu’s chief of staff early Tuesday morning that they …

House Speaker John Boehner’s problem is with his own party’s right wing. Conservatives don’t like what he’s doing.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio, pictured), who stood — visibly uncomfortable — next to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) during Monday’s announcement of the plan, released a statement saying he would vote “no” on the measure…
Conservative lawmakers Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) also came out against Boehner’s plan.
Jordan is holding out for a balanced budget amendment, and he and other conservative lawmakers continue to push for Cut, Cap and Balance, even though these measures have no chance …

California Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 130 on the back of its author, Assemblyman Gil Cedillo.
[Cedillo] described it as an important but incremental step toward expanding opportunities for deserving students who were brought to the U.S. illegally through no choice of their own. Cedillo is pressing ahead with a more expansive measure that would make certain undocumented students eligible for the state’s Cal Grants and other forms of state tuition aid.
Brown said he was “positively inclined” to back that bill but would not make a decision until it crosses his desk.…

Submitted by William
The economic meltdown has had especially negative consequences for minorities.
“What’s pushing the wealth of whites is the rebound in the stock market and corporate savings, while younger Hispanics and African-Americans who bought homes in the last decade — because that was the American dream — are seeing big declines,” said Timothy Smeeding, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor who specializes in income inequality.…

Why The Debt Ceiling May Have Already Sealed Barack Obama’s Fate

Possible one-term President Barack Obama will give a speech tonight about the ongoing debt ceiling debate, where he will presumably articulate why Harry Reid’s plan in the Senate is better for the country’s future than John Boehner’s plan in the House. Unfortunately for the country, both plans are radically destructive and guaranteed to send the economy back into a tailspin just in time for the 2012 elections.
Let’s start with Boehner’s disastrous plan. It is a slightly modified version of the “Cut, Cap, and Balance” plan that passed the House earlier this month. Boehner’s plan would …
