Sarah Palin doesn’t like that Karl Rove speculated she’d announce for president in September. Rove has a simple answer:
If she doesn’t want to be speculated about, then end the speculation by saying, ‘I’m not going to be a candidate.’ Until then, I would just recommend she might get a slightly thicker skin because if she’s got this thin a skin now, when people are saying she might be a candidate, what kind of — how is she going to react if she does get into the campaign and gets the scrutiny that every presidential candidate does get?

No, not the Grand Bargain that President Obama and Speaker Boehner negotiated last month. No, Alexander Keyssar is describing the grand bargain that saved American capitalism from fierce attacks between 1890 and 1940. In return for maintaining a capitalist system, progressives implemented three prongs: regulation, antitrust, and social insurance, that reduced inequality and ensured a social safety net. But all three prongs have been under attack since 1980 and the results are the crisis we are now in.
The regulation of business is decried now, as it was in 1880, as unwarranted interference in the workings of …

New Mexico Congressman Ben Luján was touring Goodwill Industries when he was confronted by tea partiers.
Darrel Clark of Farmington said he came for “a chance to see the elusive representative.”
“He needs to get out of politics and make room for an American,” Clark said.
Luján is a lifelong New Mexican. Clark later explained that he meant an “American patriot.”
Luján was born in Santa Fe and is a life-long American citizen (and, I’m guessing, a patriot).…

It wasn’t just about jobs. As Michael Grunwald of Time notes:
…the stimulus has cut taxes for 95% of working Americans, bailed out every state, hustled record amounts of unemployment benefits and other aid to struggling families and funded more than 100,000 projects to upgrade roads, subways, schools, airports, military bases and much more. But in the words of Vice President Joe Biden, Obama’s effusive Recovery Act point man, “Now the fun stuff starts!” The “fun stuff,” about one-sixth of the total cost, is an all-out effort to exploit the crisis to make green energy, green building and green …

Tim Cook is new CEO; Jobs elected Chairman of the Board. Jobs issued this resignation letter:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as …

Orthodox Rabbi Yehuda Levin, who has spoken on behalf of the anti-gay National Organization of Marriage, began blaming gays for Monday’s earthquake within hours of it striking.
In a video posted to YouTube, Rabbi Yehuda Levin asserted that “one of the reasons God brings earthquakes to the world is because of the transgressions of homosexuality.”
“An email went out in my community just a few hours ago, ‘How long will it take Rabbi Levin to tie this earthquake in with homosexual marriage?’” he began. “Not very long at all. I’m happy to see that people — even if some of …

An AP investigation reveals that since the September 11 attacks, the New York Police Department with the help of the CIA has targeted ethnic communities in ways that would violate federal rules if applied nationally.
The department has dispatched undercover officers, known as “rakers,” into minority neighborhoods as part of a human mapping program, according to officials directly involved in the program. They’ve monitored daily life in bookstores, bars, cafes and nightclubs. Police have also used informants, known as “mosque crawlers,” to monitor sermons, even when there’s no evidence of wrongdoing.
Neither the city council, which finances the department, nor …
