Should We Pay Members Of Congress More?

rep-steve-southerland-r-fla

Submitted by William

Florida Rep. Steve Southerland is complaining.

He said his $174,000 salary is not so much, considering the hours a member of the House puts in, and that he had to sever ties with his family business in Panama City. Southerland also said there are no instant pensions or free health insurance, as some of his constituents often ask him about in Congress.

“And by the way, did I mention? They’re shooting at us. There is law-enforcement security in this room right now, and why is that?” Southerland told about 125 people in an auditorium at the …

Sean Loftis says what he learned can help teach kids.

But that time was cut short after administrators at Nautilus learned about Loftis’ past. Under the alias Collin O’Neal, Loftis was a successful adult film star, even shooting movies on location in Miami Beach. After three to four years of success, Loftis went from in front of the camera to behind it and ran his own adult film company.

But then Loftis decided to change careers and get out of the business altogether. Loftis said he wanted to sell his company and use his Master’s Degree to teach. He qualified …

ACLU Says Schools Can’t Deny Students Access To Gay Websites

A battle is being waged concerning free speech and family values.

“There is no legitimate reason why any public school should be using an anti-LGBT filter,” said Joshua Block, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Project and leader of the “Don’t Filter Me” campaign.

The ACLU has sent warning letters to many school districts, including Prince William County Public Schools in Virginia, advising them that Internet filters blocking nonsexual gay websites are unconstitutional and must be removed to “avoid any potential litigation.”

But David Cortman, a lawyer with the Alliance Defense Fund …

Ruth Bader Ginsburg: My ACLU Work Would Disqualify Me For Today’s Supreme Court

ginsburg

Speaking at Southern Memphis University Law School, former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg laments the right-wing American tilt that would, today, likely keep her off the court.

It’s worth noting exactly what kind of work Justice Ginsburg did for the ACLU before she was confirmed to the federal bench. As director of the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project, Ginsburg was literally the single most important women’s rights attorney in American history. She authored the brief in Reed v. Reed that convinced a unanimous Supreme Court to hold for the very first time that the Constitution’s guarantee of Equal Protection applies …

Tea Party Disinvites Christine O’Donnell To Speak

OB-PF129_chr_D_20110818100557

Christine O’Donnell was originally going to be Sarah Palin’s opening act at a tea party event in Iowa.

“I made a mistake,” said Ken Crow, president of Tea Party of America. “I assumed there was an open slot and there wasn’t.”

Monday night, Mr. Crow told Washington Wire that Ms. O’Donnell would appear.

Tea Party of America’s cofounder, Charlie Gruschow, said the group withdrew Ms. O’Donnell’s after receiving numerous “emails from a lot of tea party folks that were very disappointed that she would be speaking.”

“We decided not to have her speak,” Mr. Gruschow said. “We felt it was …

Me, Myself, And I

by Stuart Shapiro

President Obama has been criticized by some on the right for being overly self-involved.  The evidence (not that the right needs evidence for their claims) is that he uses the words, ‘I’, ‘me’, and ‘myself’ excessively and particularly did so in describing the capture of Osama Bin Laden.  Well a new book shows otherwise.  From a review:

Regrettably, none of these pundits have bothered to look into how Obama might compare with his predecessors. But this kind of comparative word-counting is right up the alley of James W. Pennebaker, a social psychologist at the University of Texas …
