Drug Testing Welfare Recipients Leaves Florida Holding The Bag

index

Florida Governor Rick Scott’s decision to drug test welfare recipients has backfired, with only 2% testing positive.

Ninety-six percent proved to be drug free — leaving the state on the hook to reimburse the cost of their tests.

The initiative may save the state a few dollars anyway, bearing out one of Gov. Rick Scott’s arguments for implementing it. But the low test fail-rate undercuts another of his arguments: that people on welfare are more likely to use drugs.Ninety-six percent proved to be drug free — leaving the state on the hook to reimburse the cost of their tests.…

Here’s the problem:

“Industrial agriculture is a part of the problem,” Gore said Friday during an interview with FearLess Revolution founder Alex Bogusky. “The shift toward a more meat-intensive diet,” the clearing of forest areas in many parts of the world in order to raise more cattle and the reliance on synthetic nitrogen for fertilizer are also problems, he added.…

Possible Giffords Opponent Criticizes Her For Not Being More Media Available

l98886-1

Arizona State Sen. Frank Antenori is questioning Gabrielle Giffords’ fitness to serve.

“She is cognizant enough to read and comprehend the debt bill and cast a vote but her handlers don’t feel the media should be given access to her, and I don’t know why that is,” Antenori said in an interview with The Hill Wednesday night. “It’s creating the legitimate question: Is she able to vigorously represent the district, or was this a one-time deal? Can she do this next term to the same degree of every member of Congress, is she able to continue that level of energy?”…

Hurricane Irene Worse Because Of Global Warming

irene-red

Global warming is contributing to the intensity of Hurricane Irene. Here’s how:

Oceanic Warming. Greenhouse pollution is causing the world’s oceans to warm. Sea surface temperatures in the region where Hurricane Irene formed and along its track are around 0.5°C warmer than they were about 30 years ago. “This rise is simulated pretty well by climate models forced by anthropogenic changes in greenhouse gases and aerosols, implicating these as the probable cause,” Dr. Doug Smith, the climate scientist who leads the Met Office Decadal Climate Prediction System tells ThinkProgress. This increased heat adds about 10 to 20 miles …
