3067029459

Acting Prime Minister Mahmoud Jabril would have liked to put Muammar Qaddafi on trial.

“I want to know why he did this to the Libyan people,” he told the BBC’s Hardtalk programme. “I wish I were his prosecutor in his trial.”

Mr Jibril added that he would welcome a full investigation into the colonel’s death – as the UN has urged.…

Marco Rubio Updates Senate Bio After Washington Post Claim Of Embellishment

Rubio_Family_0ac45-025

After the Washington Post story that Florida Senator Marco Rubio had some facts wrong in his retelling of his family’s history, he has updated his Senate web page biography.

[Rubio] frequently repeated a compelling version of his family’s history that had special resonance in South Florida. He was the “son of exiles,” he told audiences, Cuban Americans forced off their beloved island after “a thug,” Fidel Castro, took power.

But a review of documents — including naturalization papers and other official records — reveals that the Florida Republican’s account embellishes the facts. The documents show that Rubio’s parents came to …

If You’re 91 And Can’t Stand, Forget About Voting In TN

Virginia Lasater, 91, is physically unable to stand in a long line at the DMV, and so she can’t get her voter ID card.

Lasater told The Daily News Journal that she has voted and worked in campaigns for 70 years. She recently moved to Murfreesboro and on Wednesday registered to vote at the local election commission.

A new law requires voters to show a photo ID at the polls. Since Lasater doesn’t have a photo on her driver’s license, she went to get one. But the testing center was packed and there were no chairs available.

Her son …

Human rights groups, Muammar Qaddafi’s widow Safia, and the United Nations want to know if the the dictator’s death amounts to a war crime.

Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said: “It is unclear how (Col Gaddafi) died. There is a need for an investigation.”

Describing footage of Gaddafi’s last moments as “very disturbing”, he said that if the former dictator had been executed: “That would raise issues that a crime had been committed and we would have to look at dealing with that. It is very clear under international law that summary executions are …

How Republicans Get Away With Crediting France For The End Of Qaddafi

Qaddafi-2

by Stuart Shapiro

We all trust our memories.  We all have particular ones that seem irrefutable to us.  But are they?  Recent research has shown how malleable our memories are.  Jonah Lehrer explains:

This research helps explain why a shared narrative can often lead to totally unreliable individual memories. We are so eager to conform to the collective, to fit our little lives into the arc of history, that we end up misleading ourselves. Consider an investigation of flashbulb memories from September 11, 2001. A few days after the tragic attacks, a team of psychologists led by William Hirst and …

Why Republican Criticisms Of Ending The Iraq War Are Disingenuous

The timeline to get out of Iraq, announced today by President Obama, is the same timeline initiated by George W. Bush, yet Mitt Romney and other Republicans are bashing Obama because of it. Romney says:

President Obama’s astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition in Iraq has unnecessarily put at risk the victories that were won through the blood and sacrifice of thousands of American men and women. The unavoidable question is whether this decision is the result of a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude in negotiations with the Iraqi government. The American people deserve to hear the …

Lawsuit: Blacks Blatantly Kept Off Alabama Juries

A-statue-holding-the-scal-002

Alabama is being accused of a practice that was outlawed 140 years ago.

The class action has been launched on behalf of thousands of black people in Alabama who were allegedly prevented from sitting as jurors in serious criminal cases, many of which carried the death penalty, in a blatant move by prosecutors to achieve all-white or largely white juries. The complaint claims that the practice has been going on for decades.
