World Population To Reach 7 Billion

people

The U.N. Population Fund says 7 billion people will be sharing the earth’s resources as of October 31.

In Western Europe, Japan and Russia, it will be an ironic milestone amid worries about low birthrates and aging populations. In China and India, the two most populous nations, it’s an occasion to reassess policies that have already slowed once-rapid growth.

But in Burundi, Uganda and the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, the demographic news is mostly sobering as the region staggers under the double burden of the world’s highest birthrates and deepest poverty. The regional population of nearly 900 million could reach …

Martin Luther King, Jr. Would Have Supported the 99% Movement

So says his daughter, Rev. Bernice King:

“I hear my father saying what we are seeing now all across the streets of America and the world is a freedom explosion,” she said, adding that we should move beyond or conception of King’s work as just about “racial justice” to include “economic justice”

Herman Cain Says Electrocuting Immigrants Was A Joke

4ba20c5298132c60cc_7jm6bhd20

Herman Cain told David Gregory he was only kidding when he said we should have an electrified fence that would kill immigrants coming over the border.

“That’s a joke,” Mr. Cain told the journalist David Gregory during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he was asked about the electrified fence. “That’s not a serious plan. I’ve also said America needs to get a sense of humor.”

Mr. Cain’s attempt to pass off incendiary comments as nothing but a joke may take more effort, however. In making the initial remarks about an electrified fence killing illegal immigrants, Mr. Cain …

Those Who Don’t Remember History . . .

fdr2

by Stuart Shapiro

While Republicans seem determined to take us back to the Gilded Age, it helps to remember how we escaped that era and became a great country. Two pieces in the past few days reminds us of the Depression that came out of the laissez-faire policies that dominated political discourse and the New Deal that helped remake the country.  Joe Nocera discusses the classic book Since Yesterday.

Allen makes the surprising point that, while small business suffered terribly during the Great Depression, big corporations did well. When large companies needed to lay off workers to maintain …

Princeton Professor Cornel West was protesting at the Supreme Court about how corporations are influencing politics.

A Supreme Court spokeswoman says 19 people were arrested Sunday afternoon after they refused to leave the grounds of the court…

Mark Cuban Advises Occupy Wall Street

mark-cuban-sirius

by Stuart Shapiro

Mark Cuban is one of my all time favorite sports owners.  He says what he thinks, wants to win and understands the importance of the fans.  I didn’t realize he also has a blog.  In today’s entry, the billionaire advises Occupy Wall Street on what they should be demanding.  Before you roll your eyes, take a look at the advice.

The simplest way to change this is to place a very simple per share tax on every transaction. 10 cents a trade. Every share. Every option. Every Bond. Every currency transaction.  Every trade.

The obvious response is …

Herman Cain: People Will Want 9-9-9 Even Though It Raises Their Taxes

Herman Cain finally admitted, on Meet the Press, that his 9-9-9 plan would raise taxes for many Americans.

CAIN: There is a huge amount of public support for 999. Just talk to anybody. This is what’s going to help us get it passed. The public support.

[David]GREGORY: I just want to break that down. So you’re acknowledging this morning, which I haven’t heard you do before, that there are individuals who are going to pay more in taxes.

CAIN: There are some, yes.

GREGORY: And you think those people are going to rally around …

Con Ed To Park51: Pay $1.7 Million In Back Rent Or We Take The Property

sharif_elgamal-300x270

The so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” is in a fight with the Con Edison utility company about rent.

Con Ed raised the rent from $2,750 a month, a rate set in 1972, to $47,437 a month, retroactive to July 31, 2008, The Post has learned.

When the mosque failed to fork over the $1.7 million, the utility fired off a letter demanding the money by Oct. 4 and threatening to evict.

Park51 principals responded with a lawsuit to stop the increase, calling Con Ed’s rent demands “outrageous.”

“Whether it is bowing to political pressure or seeking to retain the valuable premises …
