Why The Supercommittee Failed

For one thing, they barely communicated. Here’s what’s likely to happen:
The co-chairs, Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), on Monday will issue a short joint statement with the basic message: “This marriage is over.” Other possibilities are to hold a short going-out-of-business hearing, or to vote down a Republican proposal and a Democratic proposal. But one aide says: “Few, if any, one either side, want a final, ugly food fight … The chairs are working to figure out how to put the appropriate period on the sentence and do so in the most dignified …

New York resident Jose Pimental, described as a “lone wolf,” was arrested in New York. The 27-year-old was allegedly motivated by the death of American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, whom he admired.
The intended targets …were U.S. military personnel who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as U.S. postal facilities and police in New York and Bayonne, New Jersey, according to Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
The suspect was described by Bloomberg as an “al Qaeda sympathizer,” though he is not believed to have ever worked with or received training from anyone in that terrorist organization.

On Face the Nation Ron Paul said American policymakers are at least somewhat at fault for the 9/11 attacks.
Paul argued that the American military presence in Saudi Arabia – rather than ideological differences or anger over American prosperity – were motivation for the September 11 hijackers.
“Just remember that immediately after 9/11, we removed the base in Saudi Arabia, our policies definitely had an influence,” Paul said. “To argue the case they want to do us harm because we’re free and prosperous I think is a very dangerous notion, because it’s not true.”
Host Bob Schieffer then pressed Paul …

Submitted By William
Authorities have already placed the first three children of Heath and Deborah Campbell in foster homes, and they say it’s not because of their names. The family’s newest-born has also been taken away.
Hons Campbell was taken into custody by the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services late Thursday night after the doctor who delivered the baby called the agency, the paper reported…
The Campbell family stepped into the spotlight in December 2008 when a ShopRite grovery store declined to decorate a birthday cake for their son Adolf Hitler Campbell’s third birthday.
The state …

Submitted by William
Two officers at UC Davis have been placed on leave while the school investigates what led to the pepper-spraying of seated protesters.
UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said she has been inundated with reaction from alumni, staff, students and faculty over the incident Friday in which a riot gear-clad officer fires pepper spray on a line of sitting demonstrators. The protesters flinch and cover their faces but remain passive with their arms interlocked as onlookers shriek and scream out for the officer to stop.
The officers placed on leave have not been identified. In a news …

Sure to please the far-right base, Newt Gingrich told Occupy Wall Streeters off Saturday night. He spoke at a debate sponsored by Family Leader. This is the group that asked candidates to sign a pledge that said children were better off under slavery than they are today. (Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum signed). Notably absent from the event were Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney.
Gingrich argued that Occupy movement was grounded in entitlement– “all the Occupy movement starts with the premise that we all owe them everything.” With that in mind, Gingrich explained that their point was to “self-righteously …

Submitted by Mary
Congressman Ted Deutch of Florida has introduced a constitutional amendment that would take corporate money out of politics and no longer have corporations be considered persons.
Deutch’s amendment, called the Outlawing Corporate Cash Undermining the Public Interest in our Elections and Democracy (OCCUPIED) Amendment, would overturn the Citizens United decision, re-establishing the right of Congress and the states to regulate campaign finance laws, and to effectively outlaw the ability of for-profit corporations to contribute to campaign spending.
Russell Simmons announced this amendment last week while standing with Occupy Boston.…

Submitted by Epiphany
Amy Goodman of Democracy Now spoke with Dorli Rainey about the circumstances of her encounter with Seattle police that resulted in her being pepper-sprayed in the face.
In Seattle, Mayor Mike McGinn apologized Wednesday, hours after an 84-year-old retired Seattle school teacher named Dorli Rainey was pepper-sprayed in the face during a protest. Photographs of her moments after she was pepper-sprayed went viral, showing the chemical irritant and liquid used to treat it dripping from her chin. According to Occupy Seattle organizers, a priest and a pregnant teenager were also pepper-sprayed Tuesday night…”My problem is not only …

I’ve largely been ignoring Rep. Bachmann and Herman Cain lately because of their long term irrelevance to the future of this country (except when they make Governor Romney say something he will reverse in July). Sometimes, however, they come out with a whopper that is too hard to ignore.
Appearing Friday afternoon on Fox News, Michele Bachmann made a striking accusation against the Obama administration, presenting a severe conspiracy surrounding the government’s involvement in the failed Solyndra solar power company.
“It just stinks on every level. This makes Watergate look like child’s play,” Bachmann declared — referring …

The Wall Street Journal obtained documents that show how the global market for surveillance technology has grown since 9/11, and that the primary users are government and law enforcement.
The techniques described in the trove of 200-plus marketing documents, spanning 36 companies, include hacking tools that enable governments to break into people’s computers and cellphones, and “massive intercept” gear that can gather all Internet communications in a country. The papers were obtained from attendees of a secretive surveillance conference held near Washington, D.C., last month.
Intelligence agencies in the U.S. and abroad have long conducted their own surveillance. But …
