California GOP Leader: Rape Pregancies Are Rare Because ‘The Body Is Traumatized’
Isn’t this the kind of thing that got the Republicans in trouble during the election?
Celeste Greig [pictured with Marco Rubio], president of California Republican Assembly, the state’s oldest and largest GOP volunteer organization told the newspaper The Daily Democrat that pregnancies by rape are rare “because it’s an act of violence, because the body is traumatized.”
Bizarrely, the comments were made while Greig was criticizing remarkably similar comments from former Missouri U.S. Senate candidate and Congressman Todd Akin that “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy since the female body “has ways of shutting that whole thing down” — which were, of course, inaccurate. The outrage caused by Akin’s comments are widely believed to have led to his loss to Senator Claire McCaskill in 2012.
