I mean, for example, a great deal of good has come from the most conservative America. A great deal of good has come from the most libertarian and tremendous drug-adicted America. A great deal of bad has come from both of those.
Unless you mean, by those “concepts”, the rabid and radical acceptance of anyone that can contribute economically to the greater good, with independence of their cultural background, then there is no way to pin a clear set of values that explain what has made America great.
If you ask me, its because a great deal of things come from sheer luck and “being there at the right time”, not from any formula of values that, when put together, give out a great nation. If that was possible at all, this world would certaintly be a better place: all nation could strive for “greatness”.
Now you bring another very interesting point which is national identity. I do think that if one wishes to live in a country, one should be expected to give it what it asks for in return. But the dime stops there, my friend, else you trump upon personal freedom which is one of those values you seek so strongly to defend.

I think that a new tongue is going to sprout from the US as early as 2020 and its gonna be a weird mix of spanish, english, chinese and arabic, kind of like catalan (a pina colada of italian, french and spanish).
Its not bad: its an historical fact that tongue changes over time. Get over it.

What goes to the mexican cartels who are killing so many in Mexico (local projections put the death toll in 2012 at 30,000 people) and in several US cities? They certaintly can pay overprice: they own a 15 billion market due to the ilegal status of things as puny and unharmful as marihuana because governments all over the world just dont get it or dont want to get it: illegal drugs give monopoly status to the worst and better armed criminal organizations in the world.
It is we, the people, in the end who makes this decition when we vote out politicians that would prefer decrminalization or legalization due to our traditional views.

b) America is one of the heavyest drinking countries in the world?

He also contributed HEAVYLY to shortening the second world war and he was also an incurable womanizer (terrible, really, the secretarys in his school were afraid of him).
How about Edgar Allan Poe? Teddy Roosevelt? John F. Kennedy?
How about oh so freaking many that enjoyed booze and woman (even men, like the inventor of computing Alan Turing, although he was british?) and contributed so much not only to the US but to the world?
