It is time, I (Crackerjack) suggest, “to stop the practice of allowing Christians to enter hospitals. The reason is simple: the more devout (and fundamentalist) a Christian is, the more of a threat he is to doctors and nurses. … And the Tiller killing is not the first violent incident involving a Christian fundamentalist taking out a woman’s healthcare provider.
Of course, most U.S. Christians don’t shoot up their fellow countrymen. Fine. As soon as Christians give us a foolproof way to identify their fundamentalists from their moderates, we’ll go back to allowing them back into the hospitals. You tell us who the ones are that we have to worry about, prove you’re right, and Christians can once again use the health clinics, visit a doctor and collect government assistance for health needs. Until that day comes, we simply cannot afford the risk. You invent a fundie-detector that works every time it’s used, and we’ll welcome you back with open arms (and you can get a free swine-flu vaccine to boot).”
Hmmm …maybe the military needs a don’t ask don’t tell policy re: religion.
Let the Repubs do a filibuster! And if Lieberman participates it’ll just hurt him. A public spectacle (of Senators wasting time) will just solidify the impression that the Republicans are the party-of-No. There won’t even be the need to emphasize that people are dying due to lack of affordable insurance (which they are), the public won’t like the filibuster because there are plenty of other pressing matters for congress to act upon. Joe’s just posturing … or he’s stupid (probably been listening too much to McCain lately)
They’re clearly misguided. It’s a silly project. I’m not sure it’s a serious effort though (probably not). Most fundamentalists I know are content with the word by wordness of the ASV or the NASB.
hmm…first things frst. I should be more careful what I tweet, and… for the record, Alan, I generally do like and agree with most of your liberal viewpoints (in politics).
But, I’m still unimpressed by Wolfie’s blog post. It’s old anyway…not very newsy.
For me, I think Jesus’ message to us is cheapened *both* when we boil it down to simply “do unto others, as…” (as liberals tend to do) and when the message becomes dominated by “You’re not acting righteously..” or “Your belief ain’t doctrinally correct..” – “..therefore you’re surely going to hell!” (as conservatives tend to say for cherry-picked issues).
Why don’t we agree to disagree theologically for now, but agree that applying one’s religion to politics can be tricky?
All the best folks,
Snotty-nosed crackerjack … yeah it’s not my real name ;-)
I suspect Officer Strain is pulling some sort of racial stunt. I agree that it’s really no big deal that he got desk duty. If he chose to color his hair purple, got an I-heart-Miss-Piggy tat on his neck or fore-arm, or some freaky piercing I’d also question his ‘professionalism’ too. There’s probably more to the story. If he needs to express himself he can take an art class. If you’re a policeman, a visible public servant, you need to suck it up and conform to your superiors’ sense of style.
Officers on the street are *public* servants. Appearance matters. IMHO dress codes and disciplinary actions need to be a judgement call by the officers’ superiors.
Hmm … (short of spitting) I can scream in your face, and even use obscenities. I think I can understand that as protected free speech. But doing this to your kid … this has gotta be against the law. Isn’t it?!
Well … as long as they’re showing pictures of *Healthy Babies* too. I guess it’s alright. Any cartoons depicting various methods of abortion? That’d be just age-appropriate ‘education’. ;-)
You’re right Alan, it just warms my heart … Jerks!
Good point Pierre, and nice article Alan.
There’s another aspect to Van Jones’ race that could be mentioned. VJ is easily ‘framable’ because the color of his skin makes him more similar to Obama (therefore it’s easier to think he has a special and close association with the President, hence his elevation to the role of ‘czar’). It is probably a victory for the racist right that VJ has resigned but perhaps the attention will enliven support for the ColorofChange campaign. Maybe some good will come of it if Glenn Beck is fired soon.
I’m not advocating sticking our fingers in anyone’s faces. This would be more of a gloat-and-taunt-at-a-distance thing. We know the anti-reform folks are unstable. Just walk-away is good sound advice.
I could see the fist w/ raised pinky becoming a rallying sign for pro-reform folks. It’d be fun. ( Among other symbols/hand signs such as: raised fist for solidarity, V for victory, raised ink-stained finger for democracy, raised pinky if you support healthcare reform). A natural progression.
Flap,
As a born-again Christian … I see your point, though I don’t like the way you’ve expressed it (You seem to be baiting folks here to disagree with you.)
It’s appropriate to be outraged by the stupid ‘joke’. I think some tough love manifested by revoking email access for about a year is appropriate … sensitivity training to be completed sometime within the same time frame … but what do I know? Stupid, stupid joke. Stupider to forward the email while at work. I wouldn’t feel very safe in North Canton, Ohio.
Phillip, I agree, and you’ve made a fine point. Ms Palin has shown no restraint and seems to have no knowledge of ‘civility in public discourse’ nor the notion of ‘calibrating’ her rhetoric. We’re very lucky that she is not a heartbeat away from the Presidency. It’s a sign of immaturity on her part.
I wish there were some way to use this insight to decrease the popularity or put some constraints on the ’scream jockeys’ (Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Keith Olbermann … and all the wannabes) that seem to dominate so much of our political discourse these days.
A fine statement, and (though I don’t want to change the topic away from what Dr Gates has said), I did just watch Sgt Crowley statement and news conference. I was quite impressed with it as well.
I’m glad that discussion about racial stereotypes has begun, and that folks with appropriate authority do crack down directly on spammy, offensive emails. I do worry about legal consequences and electronic communication privacy though.
I hope this guy/person ( http://bit.ly/19Et4l ) does a remix of the vid. It would be called -

Bryan Fischer Of American Family Association Says "No More Muslims In The US Military"
November 9th, 2009 at 6:10 pmI must add that the Gawker has a fantastic article about why we shouldn’t be quick to label the Fort Hood shooting as simply a terrorist act

I love the first comment there as well.
