Maybe I am sheltered (and admittedly biased being a woman myself) but I have never heard the level of disrespect shown to men as I hear toward women.
As for anyone who needs to look to a TV talk show host to set an example needing to get a new set of parents… I couldn’t agree more, but the sad state of affairs is that it happens a whole lot more than you think – maybe not so much here (I admit I *might* have been a little melodramatic), but since when is is okay to be so disrespectful about other people’s children? I don’t get it, Rocky, people just can’t be that mean-spirited.
I completely agree. I meant to finish the post with that comment myself and hit submit before doing so. If Letterman is fired I want it to be on the basis that he no longer marketable in that time slot, not because some congressman thinks they have some muscle to flex.
With McCain, not so much – they just got old after a while (no pun intended considering they were always about age!). As for Rush – I never really heard them (or I don’t recall them) but if they were aimed at his addictions then I would have been upset. I think you can take pot-shots at people’s opinions, their policies/politics, their idiosyncracies – but never their kids. I’m not a Rush listener but I applaud him if he has overcome his addiction – he is to be commended, not ridiculed.
There is nothing Liberal/Conservative about this issue. I happen to be a mother — David Letterman is the south-end of a north bound mule. I don’t care if he is taking pot-shots at Palin’s daughter, Obama’s daughter, or the girl down the street – since when is it okay to verbally molest women like this? This is just not funny. If you have a daughter, a wife, or a mother – any female in your family that you would not like to see treated like a piece of trash, then you should be outraged. How can young men learn to treat women properly when a 62 year old grandpa figure treats a young girl like a harlot?
Hey, Craig! It’s been a while. I had to walk away from this place for a bit. I was spending way too much time on here…so I gave it up for Lent. I had to stay up all night last night for a sleep-deprived EEG so I thought there would be no better entertainment than reading the verbal exchanges of Mr. Frosty, Trees, Kregg, Lefty, and others.
I trust all is well with you and yours. My husband and I still have our jobs, house, and cars so I have no complaints.
Actually, some people are doubting his faith because of his non-attendance. Yes, he broke the tradition established by President Bush, but he is a new man and a new leader. There are several things that I would criticize the current administration for, but keeping his prayer-life private is not one of them. But that’s just my opinion. Take care.
I think the matter of President Obama not taking part in ceremony for the National Day of Prayer is a non-issue. I’m reminded about what Jesus said to the Pharisees about their public prayer. Prayer isn’t a ceremony or an event, it’s simply a conversation between a person and his/her God. I think we Christians need to lay off on this one.
I hope you’re doing well. I will certainly give you that praying for those who ‘persecute’ us is one of the harder things to do as a Christian.
I have never personally suffered “persecution” first-hand as a Christian – unless you count Mr. Frosty of course :-) – but what I’ve found is that when I pray for someone who I feel has hurt me, it helps rid my heart of feelings of animostiy. I’d be lying if I said it works all the time!
Flap – let’s get one thing straight I am FAR from a liberal, and thinking you’re “holier than thou” never entered my mind… believe me!
I don’t feel love and compassion for others because one day I accepted the gift of salvation and then voila God says “love” so I love. I seek to have a heart like His and I ask Him to help me see people through His eyes… and when that happens I can’t help but be moved to compassion. I don’t understand how you can’t be.
And with your moral basis being in rooted in the Holy Bible, then perhaps you’ll find your way to the fruit of the spirit… the first one being Love.
You know what, FLAP, after your rant on why you wouldn’t help others if it wasn’t because God told you to… I’m not so sure I’d rest too well in the hope of eternity. Even Jesus said that not everyone who calls him Lord will see heaven.
Willy says… “The definition of a moderate is someone who sticks his wet finger in the air and goes with the way the breeze is blowing on that perticular day. Meaning poll numbers.”
Are you nuts? A political moderate is someone who recognizes and extracts the best points of ALL political ideologies. I’m a moderate, and I think poll numbers are rubbish. Furthermore, a moderate is one who can think for themselves and not have to adhere to party lines so they can feel accepted by their so-called peers.
I feel sorry for anyone who lives in a black and white world.
I’m just curious… do you think your Satanist friends are as whacko as you think most God-believing, Jesus-following Christians are?
And Flap… And I should spread love and compassion why? Because I should? Man is evil, depraved, disgusting, etc. I love people because God tells me I should, because we all are His children, not because “I should.” Natural selection works the other way, in fact. Look at nature. Procreate and screw everyone else. I see no compelling reason why, outside of the supernatural, we should help anyone. Luckily the Declaration of Independence declares our belief in the supernatural.
Are you serious?!? You see no compelling reason why you should help others except for the fear of disobedience to God??? Have you ever heard of a stinking heart? I have never heard such nonsense out of the “mouth” of someone who purports to love God.
As for the “sinner homosexuals”… let him or her who is here without sin cast the first stone. Leave the judgement to the Judge… there won’t be on a jury in heaven so we mere mortals will have no voice on the matter.
There is no doubt that a stimulus bill is needed and it needs to be a blend of tax-cuts, investment in our infrastructure, and help for those who are the hardest hit by the seemingly out-of-control downward spiral.
What we don’t need is the biggest spending bill in history being shoved through Congress like White Castles through the intestinal tract! We’re going to end up with the same result if we’re not careful. I apologize for the graphic analogy, but sometimes you just have to call it like it is! :)
Also what we don’t need is many of the pet projects that are seemingly found in this bill. I’m an avid wildlife advocate but the Delta Smelt in California can wait a little. Let’s put more money into infrastructure – I’d gladly increase my taxes a bit to see all the stinking power lines buried, levees repaired, etc. etc.
I’m so disillusioned with our congress right now I just don’t know what to think. I fear for our nation.
Perhaps that many church-going Christians, but not bible literalists?!
I think if all those church-goers – even the most fundamental of fundamentalists – were truly honest with themselves they would have to come to the conclusion that many of the stories in the Bible are not to be interpreted literally.
I believe Noah’s world did experience a massive flood at that time but we have to remember that Noah’s “world” was incredibly small.
I do wish the biblical exhortations to DO good would be taken more literally by those same people. President Obama did a great job at the National Prayer Breakfast inciting people to do just that. I thought it was a pretty inspiring message and THOSE things we are to take literally.
Nope, I do not think the Ark story is literal. I’m pretty darn sure that polar bears didn’t exist in the land of Noah! Either that or they evolved since then, and I think they’ve been around a wee bit longer than that (I can’t remember when they evolved from the grizzly, but I’m sure it was before Noah!) The same as I don’t think the story of Adam and Eve is literal.
But your assumption that some Christians take the whole Bible literally word for word (when it suits them) is correct. Now moving on to the story of Jesus – I absolutely do believe He is the Son of God.
And by the way, Frosty, the Noah story … you either have the most vivid imagination on the planet or those frosty cocktails are hallucinogenic! Of course you HAD to throw in the goats for Kregg and Um Cara’s sake! :)
Frosty – I just read an excerpt from The End of Poverty. I’ll be at Barnes and Noble tomorrow to get it. Thanks for the reference source. I read the excerpt about Malawi – who could read just those few pages and not be moved to compassion? Thanks again.
So I hope you will consider voting Democrat, as long as the GOP promotes isolationism…
I’m still in my learning mode – that’s why I hang around Liberaland. I’m beginning to see that those “damned democrats” as my dad used to say are not really evil incarnate… only a few of them ;). I’ll never be able to embrace far-left any more than I could embrace far-right but the idea of voting Democrat seems less foreign to me than a year ago.
I’m ashamed to say that I’ve been ignorant for so long on the different ideologies. I only hope that I can lay aside those ideas that have been entrenched in my psyche for the last 50 years and find truth. I am working on it, Frosty, I truly am.
Just a note on the mission trips… I wanted to share with you a trip we did to Greensburg, KS. Our church did a Build-a-Bear drive and collected 250 fully clothed brand new Build-a-Bears. We loaded all these bears into a big van and drove 16 hrs to get out there for a “going back to school” celebration. We set up wheelbarrels full of these bears and let the kids pick out the one they wanted – you would have thought we had given them a gold mine. We spent the rest of the week picking up debris, working at the Salvation Army, and doing other odd jobs as needed. There was no glamour, no sight-seeing and we were dead by the end of the week. But those 4 hours spent with the kids are probably 4 of the most significant hours of my life. I will never be the same. I know some will think I’m looney but I do think that was inspired by Someone greater than me – I don’t think I have that capacity to just know that’s what those kids needed. We were told they all took their bears to school the next day, to the dinner table, and would not let go of them. One grandmother told us she hadn’t seen her grandson smile since May and this was in August.
I said all that, not to boast or brag, but to let you know that there are people who want nothing more than to go to our own cities and make a difference. We’ve been to Mississippi, New Orleans, LA, and Indianapolis. I would be all ears if you or anyone else has contacts or ideas for other such work.
On the abortion issue… whatever happened to shades of gray? I don’t think most reasonable people are solidly on the anti or pro side of the issue. Where’s the reason on forcing a young girl to have a baby after she’s been raped? No matter how anti-abortion you are, you have to consider the life of ALL innocents and that includes that young mother. What about en vitro fertilization – multiple embryos are implanted with the hopes that 1 viable fetus will be the result. How many staunch anti-abortion people have gone down that road?
I personally am solidly in the gray area. I think there are limits that need to be in place but to think that there would be no abortion if Roe v. Wade was overturned is just ludicrous. We would go back to dark alleys, coat hangers, and more botched abortions than the mind can conceive.
If we want to see fewer abortions (and of course we do) let’s start by insisting that contraceptives are a covered expense under one’s health insurance plan! I’d gladly see tax dollars pay for contraceptives.
I’ve worked for the same company for 29 years. No one in our company has had a salary increase since 2002 and that’s okay with all of us so that our doors stay open and our health insurance is still fully paid. Late last month one of my clients had to cut their budget by 50% so that wasn’t good news. Fifty year old software developers are considered dinosaurs in the business, so I’m starting to pursue other interests on the side as a safety net. My husband’s work is still pretty strong locally, but they are talking layoffs throughout the global corporation so we’ll see.
